The Mendelssohn Trio (Erik Peterson, violin; Barbara Thiem, cello; Bryan Wallick, piano) was formed in 1988 and is named for Thiem's great grandfather, Franz von Mendelssohn, a nephew of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and an important supporter of artists and musicians in the Berlin of the early 20th century. The members of the trio are university professors and in residence at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado where they give frequent concerts and work closely with the students on chamber music projects.

In addition to concerts in the US the trio has performed on four tours to several European countries including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2012 their concerts included an appearance at the International Mendelssohn Festival in Berlin. In 2019 they played in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in a program of the woman composers Fanny Hensel, Ellen Zwillich as well as a trio by the Swiss composer Frank Martin. The trio performed in another European Tour in the fall of 2022, including appearances at the Mendelssohn Reunion in Berlin.

While performing the standard repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries the trio has also made an effort to introduce its audiences to works by 20th century composers such as the Americans Muczynski, Copland and the young Suzanne Sorkin, as well as the Europeans Martinu, Bridge, Martin and Bloch. In one of the last programs, they premiered a trio by the little-known French composer Theodore Gouvy (1819-1898) together with the well-known one by Maurice Ravel.

Das Mendelssohn Trio, bestehend aus Erik Peterson, Geige, Barbara Thiem, Cello und Bryan Wallick, Klavier, wurde in 1988 gegründet und nach Thiem's Urgrossvater benannt: Der Bankier Franz von Mendelssohn, ein Neffe Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, war wichtiger Mäzen der Künste im Berlin des frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Die Mitglieder des Trios sind Unversitätsprofessoren und spielen regelmässig Konzerte an der Colorado State University, wo sie mit den Studenten intensiv Kammermusik betreiben.

Ausser Konzerten in den USA hat das Trio vier europäische Tourneen in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz unternommen. Im Sommer 2012 traten sie u.a. im Internationalen Mendelssohn Forum in Berlin auf. Im Sommer 2019 spielten sie eine weitere Tour durch Österreich, Deutschland und die Schweiz mit einem Programm der beiden Komponistinnen Fanny Hensel und Ellen Zwillich, sowie dem Schweizer Komponisten Frank Martin. Das Trio spielte eine weitere Tournee im Herbst 2022, einschliesslich Auftritten bei der Mendelssohn Familienversammlung in Berlin.

Das Repertoire des Trios umfasst die wichtigen Stücke des 18ten und 19ten Jahrhunderts. Sie haben sich aber auch bemüht Werke des 20ten Jahrhunderts aufzuführen: Amerikanische Komponisten wie Muczynski, Copland und die junge Suzanne Sorkin, sowohl als Europäer wie Martinu, Bridge, Martin und Bloch.
